No, generally you cannot dye waterproof fabrics. Standard dyes are not UV resistant so will quickly fade back to their old color with added stains and streaks which will make your waterproof fabric look far worse.

Can you dye canvas covers?

A modern canvas awning is typically made of a polyester fabric and is best re-colored by immersion dying, a process that is somewhat more involved than that of dying natural fabrics.

Can I dye my canvas shoes?

For best results, we recommend dyeing canvas shoes or silk bridal type shoes. We do not recommend dyeing leather shoes. The only exception would be Uggs® Sheepskin boots. If the shoes you are dyeing are white or off white, then you should be able to achieve true color.

Is Rit dye permanent?

Union Dyes, such as RIT, Dylon Multipurpose and Dylon Permanent are “Universal” dyes that allow you to dye a variety of fabrics. While union dyes will dye many fabrics, the colors will be less brilliant, and less colorfast. They only require salt to “fix” the dye.

Can I dye my Sunbrella cushion covers?

If the cover can be removed, you can consider dying just that, but remember that most outdoor cushions are designed to withstand the elements, and so the fabric may have been treated in a way that makes it impossible to dye with ordinary dyes you can get from your local craft shop.

Can I dye my outdoor cushion covers?

Most outdoor cushions are made with synthetic fabrics (i.e. fabric that contains more than 35% polyester, acrylic or acetate). Synthetics require high consistent heat when dyeing so it must be done on your stovetop in a pot to maintain almost boiling temperatures for the duration of your dyeing.
